Motorcycle Towing
a look back |
|
*Editors notes and comments in red. These are actual solutions from a forty year old motorcycle publication.
While some of the solutions are still being used others seem comical. |
 |
A good stout plank makes a
good loading ramp for pickups and trailers. Make a hook or pin
fastener for one end so it won't slip off the tailgate as you
move the bike on or off. |

Loading the trusty scoot onto a Ford Ranchero after a ride in the snow "notice front rim"
Most motorcycle trailers and motorcycle towing solution were custom designed and manufactured
in backyards and driveways. The Dirt Bike itself received the same home engineered solutions.
Notice the front fender mounted on the rear. Also visible is the number one modification of the
day to turn any motorcycle into a dirt bike... Install a rear sprocket the size of an extra large pizza. |
|
If you've already
got a trailer to take your dune buggy out,
it's little
problem to
add support
for your bike
as well.
The two are often seen in
teams such as this. |

Not sure if the white walled baby moon wheels
are coolest or the fringed effect around the roof |

One method
of carrying allows the bike to be its own
trailer, but requires licensing, operable
tail and stoplights, and still passes as a
trailer with resulting speed restrictions.
The front wheel is removed and the 'cycle
rolls on its own rear wheel A custom U shaped
bracket can be used. The front of the bike
and the bracket secured to the rear of your
car. The front wheel is carried inside the
car and quickly replaced on arrival at the
destination.
In a recent interview with ex motocross star David Bailey he mentioned that he actually used the previous mentioned method to get his Dirt Bike to the races the first year he went pro. |

A bumper-mounted channel may carry a machine
cross-ways-even larger bikes have been seen
on heavy rails at the backs and fronts of
big camper rigs. These are available
commercially or may be built by the
individual to fit his own auto or truck.
Varying on this theme is a lighter weight
carrier made of strap metal and rod or
tubing, each of two sides supporting a
wheel.
Special trailers are made specifically for
toting 'cycles and these are available in
various degrees of sophistication for from
one to three bikes.
Putting the shoe on the other foot, camping
trailers have been developed which may be
towed by a motorcycle and set up into a fine
sleeping tent once at the scene. The trailer
also allows carrying of camp gear, but its
use is limited to going on easy roads only,
not the thing to pack back into the wilds. |
